Frank Ilse Scratchbuilds the

Part 6: The Completed Model
Back to Menu

So, at least, it is done. I finished my scratchbuilt model of USS Saipan (LHA-2) about ten months ago and finally found the time to make decent pictures of it. When I started this project, the original Saipan was still in commission. As we know, she is no more. So this model is also a kind of tribute to her crew and performance throughout the years of her service. It took me three and a half years to complete this model, I learned a lot about scratchbuilding techniques and developed my own ones that I will use when I will tackle future projects. It was fun and the geatest modelling experience I had so far. This submission to the gallery is also the final part of my feature "Building the Gator" that I startet two years ago and interrupted, due to lack of time.

I do not know how many hours it took me and how many parts there are in this model. But I do wish to thank the community on modelwarships for backing me up from time to time and for giving very valuable tips. And I am glad to see that I will not have to scratch a "Wasp"-class.

Parts an items I used come from the following aftermarket-companies:

  • L'Arsenal
  • White Ensign Models
  • Gold Medal Models
  • Corsair-Armada
  • Commander Iron Shipwright
  • Evergreen
  • Floating Drydock
  • stillmotionsphotographics
  • Veteran Models
  • Preiser
