Tom's Modelworks has released a photo-etch detail set, number 3593, for the new Very Fire 1/350 Cleveland-class models:  the USS Cleveland (CL-55) and the 1/350 USS BIrmingham (CL-62).  Both models depict these ships in their late-World War II fits.

CLEVELAND CLASS PHOTO-ETCH
There are two frets in the packages.  The largest is set #3593, and is specifically designed for the new Very Fire Cleveland's.

This fret is about 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in size.  It includes railings, vertical ladders, inclined ladders, boarding ladders, platforms, braces for said platforms, floater net baskets, RDF loops and radars.  Lots and lots of radars.   Among the radars you'll find parts for SK, SK-2, Mk 4, Mk 8, Mk 12, Mk 22 and IFF.  There also form to help you get the correct shapes on the Mk 4 and Mk 12 radars.   These photo-etch radars will be a big upgrade of the kit parts, particularly the gunnery radars and the SK-2.

There are also parts for the floatplanes, yardarms, hand wheels, as well as for both the 20mm and 40mm guns.

Fret #3507 is the smaller of the two frets.  It includes all the parts to detail two catapults, as well as two different styles of aircraft cranes and a pair of boat cranes.

Everything is well done, with some nice relief etching on the platforms.

INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions are extensive - 9 double sided pages.   There are drawings and photographs throughout, to help you with assembly and placement of the parts.  They are well done and easy to follow.   There are some of the most comprehensive instructions I've seen in a detail set.

CONCLUSIONS
This is a nicely done set of photo-etch.  The gunnery radars and the platforms are especially nice.  If you are someone who wants to dress up the already nice Very Fire Cleveland class kits, but don't want to replace everything with photo-etch, or break the bank, this set is for you.

The set retails for $48.00 USD, and is available directly from Tom's Modelworks, who'd I'd like to thank for this review sample.   Highly recommended.
