1/350 Lion Roar
JMSDF DDG-177 Atago Update Set
Reviewed by Timothy Dike March 2012
OVERVIEW

Trumpeter recently released a new 1/350 model of the Japanese Guided Missile Destroyer Atago. It is a pretty nice kit out of the box, but lack the fine details that discriminating modelers like to add. This new super detail set from Lion Roar addresses the short comings of the kit. It includes 7 photo etched brass frets, new resin detail parts, and CNC machined brass gun barrels.
PHOTO ETCH FRETS A-G
Fret A includes parts to make the Type 90 Ship-to-Ship Missile frames. New platforms that have a realistic thickness as compared to the kit supplied parts. Some platforms even include the bracing on the underside.  Click to enlarge

Fret D contains four bar railings. These have a bottom gutter rail to help with applying them to the decks.  Click to enlarge
Fret E includes the short custom shaped railings. Note; these are made to the length they need to be, so you will not have to cut them. Click to enlarge
Fret F has more custom shaped railings of the 2 and 3 bar type.  Click to enlarge
Fret G has radio antenna and radar parts. These are very finely etched. Click to enlarge
RESIN PARTS
This set is more than a photo etch upgrade set. It also includes some really nice resin parts. The small boats and RHIB's are nicely cast and far better than the over simplified versions found in the kit. Covered radomes with and without brackets are also included.
Two new CWIS and their bases are included. These are very well cast and can be posed in different positions. The CWIS has a separate muzzle base that will make mounting the gun barrel much easier.
Two sizes of anchors are provided to replace the kit supplied versions.
METAL PARTS
New CNC machined brass gun barrels are provided for the 5" (127 mm/62 cal) Mk-45 gun. The ends of the barrel is drilled out to give it an open look. Phalanx CIWS 20mm gun barrels are included. The radio antenna poles found on the superstructure and stern are machined with a nice taper to them.  Click to enlarge

INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions are 18 pages or step by step views showing all aspects of the assembly process. Very well done and they should leave little doubt as to where everything fits.
