The final Hasegawa upgrade set for the 1941 1/350 IJN Nagato. This "Detail-Up Parts Super" is comprised of a number of detail parts for the kit. One of the main attractions of this set are the brass barrel upgrades for the 16" guns. These are finely machined, having a nice shape and muzzle. They have the same post at the rear, and should be an easy replacement for the kit's plastic ones. The barrels are designed to use an unused part from the kit for the blast bag attachment; so the kit was designed from the beginning to have a brass upgrade barrel! Good planning on Hasegawa's part.

Other parts in this set are resin cutters and a sampan to add to the ship's boats complement; a brass, adhesive-backed nameplate in Kanji; and adhesive-backed felt cushions for the display stands.

The photoetch fret focuses mainly on the aircraft catapult and upgrades to all the ship's boats.

Close ups of the set

The parts are relief etched where applicable, and the rails are etched with "sag." There are many replacement ladders for the kit.

The brass of this set is a tad on the thin side; not flimsy, but not stiff either.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instruction sheet is a large, single page fold-out, with detailed folding steps. These steps focus mainly on the photoetch catapult and the many upgrades to the ship's boats. I have scanned a few selections from the sheet.

CONCLUSIONS

This is set #40065, IJN Battleship Nagato Detail Up Parts Super from Hasegawa. This set retails for $106.95, which seems expensive.

Many thanks to Modelwarshipper Kym Knight, who arranged for us to see his kit and goodies while on a detour from its route to Australia. Thanks Mate!
