Alliance ModelWorks is a new company producing photo etch for modelers. They have produced a variety of new sets in 350 and 700 scale that are sure to interest modelers. This one features 1/700 Railroad equipment including center cab switchers, box cars, hopper cars, and gondolas.
There is a single relief etched brass fret in this set that includes locomotives, cars, track, and signals. On the fret is a few sections of track to provide a base to display the engines. Most dockyards would have the track paved over so these section will look best leading up to the docks. Three center cab switchers are provided. These are similar to US prototypes, but have European style bumpers instead of the US style couplers. If you clip off the bumpers, you these would look good in a US Dockyard diorama.

The cars have separate undercarriage and bodies. The boxcar has a really smart assembly that includes all the sides and bottom with a separate roof. The ladders on the ends fold up for a 3D look. Most cars have separate doors that can be shown open or closed. The hopper car looks pretty convincing too. Now where would I get a load of 700 scale coal??? There are also wig-wag style crossing bucks, line signal, and telephone poles.
The instructions are a single page showing the basic construction of each item. At first glance these appear adequate, but upon study, you will notice that there is a lot that is not shown. The center cab is shown after it is already folded up and some parts attached. While it seems pretty obvious where the parts fold and attach, more info should be provided.
|Below are some of the items shown built up. There on more
on the Alliance
is really cool set that will allow you to have some really high quality
diorama accessories. The etching is very well done and the only real shortcoming
is the instructions.
This is set number # NW70009 Dockyard Diorama Accessories - Train set 2 with a list price of $13.00 US. A really nice price for a 700 scale Train set. Check out this one and the other sets on the Alliance ModelWorks Website.
