Veteran Models 1/350
IJN Type 89 12.7cm 40cal twin AA gun
Yet another review
by Sean Hert

The Type 89 gun, in a twin, high-angle mounting, was the standard IJN Heavy AA gun throughout World War Two. Virtually every major combatant of the IJN, and many of the minor ones, carried this gun in some form, as well as being used as a shore mount. Approximately 1500 of these guns were produced.

There were several differing types of mount for the Type 89. Veteran Models has released the open twin mount variant, seen primarily on early battleships and aircraft carriers and as additional AA refitted to Yamato in 1944.

RESIN PARTS

This kits includes parts to make 4 twin Type 89 AA mounts, as well as some mounted binoculars and fuse setters. Each mount consists of 14 highly-detailed parts, including the provided brass barrels (2) and 4 photoetched parts. Assembly doesn't appear too challenging, although some experience with photoetch is recommended before folding the loader's platforms.

INSTRUCTIONS

A single sheet of instructions is included (broken into 2 images here for ease of display). The steps require some close study, as some assembly happens "off camera." I like that Veteran uses images of their model in the instructions, but I'd like the steps to be a little more isometric and/or show more detail.

CONCLUSIONS

A highly detailed upgrade for your IJN subject is a step above the plastic guns available in most kits, and is recommended for modelers with some prior experience with aftermarket accessories.

This is set #VTM350008 1/350 IJN Type 89 12.7cm AA Gun (4 to a package) with a list price of $25.95.
