1/700 Lion Roar
IJN Late War Carrier Based Aircraft
OVERVIEW
LionRoar famous for their photo etch detail sets, has entered the injection molded plastic kit market. This 1/700 aircraft set is one of their first offerings and it is very nice. The set features four late war carrier based aircraft types molded in tan plastic. First I have to applaud them for not doing them in clear plastic. While the clear option sounds cool, it is actually much harder to work with than the softer plastics like that in this set. This set features the nicest molded aircraft I have seen yet. Nice recessed panel lines separate prop spinners, and bombs and torpedoes! Nice photo etch and decals are also included.

PHOTOETCH
The photo etch fret includes the landing gear and props for each of the aircraft types above. The fret is laminated between two sticky clear sheets and there are no attachment points on the parts. This is the first time I have seen this method used and it is a great bonus. You don't have to cut the parts off, you just peel the plastic back and pick them off.  Click to enlarge
As you can see I started to peel the plastic back so some of the parts are not lined up with the openings anymore. No more cutting off the parts with a hobby knife and sanding the tiny parts. I hope they repeat this on future sets.
DECALS
Aircraft markings include big and small "meatballs" and colored stripes for the leading wing edges. These are very nicely done
INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions are four pages and a color guide on the back of the box. Well drawn with all parts shown, and all you need to build your air wing. Click to enlarge

CONCLUSIONS
Click to enlargeThis set is best 700 scale aircraft set I have seen to date. I'm sure I have not seen them all, but this set includes some really nice molding, and detailing. Bombs, torpedoes, and extra fuel tanks gives it extra value for the superdetailer. Check out this and other Lion Roar sets at your favorite retailer. You can find out more at the Lion Roar website.
