The Type 97 tank was the most common Japanese medium tank of world war two. It was originally designed with the  57 mm main gun used on the Type 89B tank. This gun was adequate for infantry support, but proved to be inferior to enemy tanks such as the 45 mm gun of the Soviet BT-5 and BT-7 tanks encountered in the Battles of Khalkhin Gol in 1939. A new turret featuring a 47 mm weapon was ready by 1941. They proved to be versatile tanks and were successful in the jungles of Malaya and the Philippines. They were more than a match for the  M3 Stuart light tanks, however they could not penetrate the frontal armor of the M4 Sherman medium tank. They were used to defend the islands of Saipan, Guam and Okinawa, sometimes as stationary batteries buried up to their turrets. Many survived the war and served on in the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) into the 50's.

Japanese Type 97 Tank
New from L'Asenal is this set of five Type 97 resin tanks. They come with 2 different turrets, the 57 mm and 45 mm versions. Casting is very good and the detailing of the track links is very impressive. The gun barrels are very fine and care should be used to keep from breaking them. Very little cleanup is needed as flash is minimal/ Click images
