Background

I’ve had the privilege of working with Andrew Finnegan who is one of the owners of Above & Below Scale Graphics in Canada on anti-slip pad decals for WWII and later ships. This is a much needed enhancement for many ship subjects and kits, especially destroyers and cruisers. Researching this we found that these anti-slip pads took many forms. The pads were peel and stick, or cut to size from rolls. Gun tubs and some ships had pathways painted with texture paint and not the subject of this effort. Sheets are ordered directly from Above & Below Graphics from their web page

The Decals

Above & Below Graphics uses high quality decal film and high end printers. Scales available are 1/700, 1/400, 1/350, 1/144, 1/200, and 1/96 scales and sheets are printed to order. The decal film is thin and cover the entire backing paper, so you will need to cut out what sizes you want to apply at a time. I would recommend working in short manageable sections as shown in the photos. I received an evaluation sheet and practiced applying these decals on painted surface and unpainted Evergreen Styrene Sheet. Caution should be exercised when applying the decals as they separate quickly from the backing paper when water is applied. I would suggest less than 10 seconds in warm water and remove. Then you can slide them off onto your subject as you normally would. If you wait longer you might find your decal floating away from the paper. Note that the printed decals are darker than they appear on the web page. You can see what they look like in the provided photo where I’ve applied them to a white plastic sheet.

There are three different styles to choose from. Three are rectangular with different lengths (6” x 16”, 6” x 24”, and 6” x 36”), and the third are 36” scale squares. If the size isn’t quite what you are looking for you might check with Andrew to see if he can accommodate you.
