The RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile
(RAM) is a lightweight, quick-reaction, fire-and-forget missile. It was
originally intended as and used primarily as a point-defense weapon against
anti-ship cruise missiles. However, it has also been used against air and
surface threats.
The RIM-116 RAM was jointly developed by the U.S.
and German governments. The Mk 49 RAM Guided Missile Launching System (GMLS)
was evaluated on board the destroyer USS David R. Ray in the late 1980s.
The system became operational onboard USS Peleliu on November 14, 1992.
The RIM-116 RAM and Mk 49 RAM GMLS are fully operational in the American,
German, South Korean, Greek, Egyptian, UAE, Turkish and Japanese navies.
RAM is deployed worldwide on more than 100 ships ranging from fast patrol
boats to aircraft carriers. |
The
Swordfish Models Mk 49 RAM Launcher with Base come printed on a raft attached
with what appears to be a dab of clear glue to the bottom of a clear plastic
clam shell box. The label states that the set contains two pieces but you
actually get the parts to make four launchers. Each RAM launcher come in
two parts, the base and the missile housing. Each part is very well detailed,
with grab handles on the base and hinges for the doors and the recessed
circular covers for each missile port on the missile housing. The silo
part has a nib on each side that will fit into corresponding slots on the
launcher. The parts come on the print raft with a few thin attachment points.
Having the launcher in two parts will enable you to build it in any position
you wish.

The
set of four Mk 49 RAM launchers with base runs for €9.00, which is
approximately $10.50 US, and is a really good price for such an excellent
3D accessory that requires little assembly. These launchers will greatly
improve your model of a ship fitted with a Mk 49 RAM launcher. Highly recommended.
My thanks to Swordfish Models for providing the review sample.
