The most recent effort to arrive from Kraken Hobbies is an upgrade set for the old Midship Models Benham-class destroyers, USS Sterret DD-407 1/700 3D Printed Upgrade kit.

The packaging is in a small cardboard box, with large clamshell plastic container, wrapped in bubble wrap, inside the box.  Inside the plastic clamshell container are 19 print rafts, holding 22 3D printed parts, all printed in a grey resin.   The parts include replacements for all the superstructure parts, a new funnel, two torpedo tubes, four 5 inch gun turrets, a 36in searchlight, a Mk33 director, two 26ft boats and six 20mm guns.

The largest parts are the four superstructure and deckhouse parts.  These are crisply printed with lots of details.  There are doors, piping and portholes.  The missing platforms at the break of the fo'c'sle are integrally printed as part of the forward superstructure.   The open window in the bridge also look really nice, and are a big improvement on the original kit parts.  The aft deckhouse is equally well done.

There is also a structure called the "torpedo workshop" in the set.  This has prominent vents on the top of it and detail on the sides, including W/T doors.

The funnel is well done, with very nice piping fore and aft.  The forward piping is topped by what looks like a siren.   Inside the funnel - which has some nice depth to it - are some "dividers" (I'm not sure of the correct naval terminology), but they look good.  I did,  however, notice some print line on the funnel trunk.  Hopefully a coat of paint, or some light sanding, will cover this up.

There are four 5in gun turrets included.  While I only photographed one, there appear to be three different types - two "double knuckle" turrets, which are the lower pair of turrets fore and aft, a "single knuckle" turret and finally a "cloth topped" turret, which is the aft super firing turret.  All the turrets have good detail and extremely thin barrels.  I managed to break one while removing the parts from the container.

A Mk 33 gun director is included, as are a pair of 26ft boats.  The boats are especially nice, with interiors and well done tillers.   One 36" searchlight is provided, as well as a pair of torpedo tubes and six 20mm guns.   The 20mm are tiny, with the barrels being about as fine as human hair.

There is one page of instructions included.  It's simple, but easy to figure out how all goes together.

CONCLUSIONS

Back in the day, the Midship Models destroyers were awaited with much anticipation.   It's no secret that - while they were a noble effort - the models were also disappointing to many, with soft details and inaccuracies.   This upgrade set is just the thing you'll need to brings these kits up to modern standards.   The parts are crisply printed and well detailed.  For all that is included - this set basically replaces everything above the hull - it's also quite the bargain.

I sold off most of my Midship destroyers years ago, holding on to just two, one of which was planned to be a Sterret, so this set is most welcome.  Hopefully Kraken will follow this release up with others, so more of these Midship Models can make it out of the back of the stash and onto modelers workbenches.

This is Kraken Hobbies USS Sterret DD-407 1/700 3D Printed Upgrade kit.  It retails for $19.99  USD, and is available directly from Kraken Hobbies, who I'd like to thank for this review sample.   Highly recommended!
