Kraken Hobbies has sent along another one of their products for review.   This one is a conversion set that will allow a modeler to convert one of the Dragon Benson-Gleaves class kits into one of the ships from Destroyer Division 22:  1/350 DesDiv 22 Conversion DD433-436.   Per the Kraken website, "This kit was designed to work with the USS Livermore kit as it has the canvas topped #3 turret, but any Dragon Gleaves kit can be modified."

Destroyer Division 22 (DesDiv22) were the first four Gleaves-class kits to arrive in the Pacific theater.  The Destroyer History Foundation website says that "The first Gleaves-class 1,620-tonners to arrive in the Pacific were the four destroyers of Division 22, detached from DesRon 11 to form the screen for Hornet (CV 8) in her passage through the Panama Canal in March 1942 and her delivery of LCol. “Jimmy” Doolittle’s B-25 bombers in their raid on Japan in April.  On arrival, Gwin, Meredith, Grayson and Monssen became the most modern destroyers in the theater. In their first assignment, the four—with cruisers Vincennes and Nashville and oiler Cimarron—formed the escort for Hornet‘s Task Force 18 in General “Jimmy” Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo in April; Gwin and Monssen were also present at the Battle of Midway in June.  Three of the four were lost in the Solomon Islands campaign."

Originally a Red Devil Designs product, the Kraken website states that "This is an upgraded edition over the original design. To help prevent warping and breakage during removal of the print raft, the aft deck now includes the below deckhouse and improved detailing."

The upgrade set arrives in a cardboard box. Inside of the box is a plastic clamshell container, with the two 3D printed rafts - one with the aft superstructure and a smaller one with a 20mm gun tub.  Both rafts are secured to the bottom of the packaging with double sided tape.  The parts are printed in a light orange color, and have nice detail.  I asked the Kraken himself about the orange, and he said these parts were from his new printer, and that "The orange makes some high detailed parts but suffers with the thinner walls not being so strong."   He plans on experimenting with different types of resin to see what works best.

Detail is terrific.  The larger of the two parts is the aft superstructure, which has hatches, watertight doors, fire hoses and ladders printed integral to the sides.  On the top of the deckhouse, the splinter shields are thin, almost to the point of being translucent, while the tops of the ready ammo boxes have details included.  There are also delicate support poles printed as part of the deckhouse.  Be careful when removing the part from the raft, as not to break these.

Thepièce de résistance of this part is the searchlight platform.  Here you'll find a small access ladder leading up to the platform, which had printed on on railings.  The great part about these rails is they are flared like the real thing, which will eliminate the hassle of trying to bend a photo-etch part into shape.

A second, smaller print raft contains the additional 20mm platform you'll need to round out the compliment of nine 20mm guns theses ships carried.  As with the larger part, the splinter shields are very thin, and there are those delicate support poles.   The splinter shields on both parts also have subtle bracing/support strips on the outside edges of the shields.

CONCLUSIONS
If you are a fan of the naval war in the Pacific in general, the battles around Guadalcanal in particular, or specifically a fan on US Navy Gleaves-class destroyers, this set is for you.  While it will allow you to add a unique version of this class of ships to your scale model fleet, it will also allow you to convert a Livermore kit into one of the four members of DesDiv 22, all of whom saw heavy action in the South Pacific, during the vicious fighting that swirled around "Starvation Island".  There is really terrific detail printed onto these parts, and the conversion itself should be very straightforward, even without any instructions.

This is Kraken Hobbies conversion set 1/350 DesDiv 22 Conversion DD433-436.  It retails for $15.99  USD, and is available directly from Kraken Hobbies, who I'd like to thank for this review sample.   Highly recommended!
