Black Cat Models has sent along a copy of their newest detail set for review. This set is 1/350 CK350010, Fletcher-class destroyer Catapult & Crane Detail Set. This set will enable modelers to to upgrade Trumpeter's new 1/350 USS Stevens, in her unique "scout" configuration, with a OS2U Kingfisher, catapult and crane.

Included in the set are two print rafts, one that contains the catapult and crane, the other a single OS2U Kingfisher.

The packaging is in Black Cat's typical plastic clamshell container.

CATAPULT & CRANE

The catapult is printed as one part, and is magnificently rendered. It has lots of great details - the hand wheel is outstanding.

The crane is printed as two parts, again with great detail. Also included are the kingpost, winch, and other assorted parts. Details are terrific all the way around.

OS2U KINGFISHER

The Kingfisher is printed as one piece, with separate props (4 are provided) and 2 standing crew. Both the front and rear cockpits are detailed, and the canopy frames - which are open - are not much bigger than human hair. The float supports are also very thin. Printed to the underside of the aircraft are two small bombs, which is a nice touch.

There is a 3 page set of instructions available on the product page on the Black Cat website. It is fairly self-explanatory.

CONCLUSIONS

I am really impressed with this set. The details on both the catapult/crane and Kingfisher are outstanding. Some of the parts that stood out to me are the hand wheels on the catapult and the crane base, the vertical ladder on the crane kingpost, the canopy on the Kingfisher and the fineness of the aircraft handling crane. Everything here is far superior to the kit parts. Frankly, I think this set is a must have if you are going to build the I Love Kit USS Stevens kit. Highly recommended!
